are the characters in our dreams part of our selves?

When there's a character in my dream, it feels almost like that person really is a different entity.
- I don't feel his pain. Hear his thoughts.
- I can't even predict his words, even though they are generated by "me"
Relates to the question of, how do we know our thoughts are us?
