names are like fiat currency
#observation #thought
- Inspired by A story about my name prompt from class
- Broader question: what's in a name?
- In certain cultures, especially in the past, names carried intrinsic meaning
- From your name, I could perhaps tell certain properties about you.
- Still true to a certain extent: "Sir", "Dr",...
- But mostly, names are a fiat entity.
- They mean nothing until you associate it with a person.
- They mean nothing when you use it, if you don't share common knowledge about said person that it refers to.
- Like how fiat currency doesn't really have any intrinsic value, without the common belief that it does.
